There’s an ongoing debate regarding EMT vs. RMC conduit. If you’re in between, and not sure which type is right for you, get in touch with American Conduit. We have a team of professionals who know everything there is to know about conduit. You just tell us about your specific application, and we’ll be glad to recommend the right choice. You can also turn to us for all your aluminum conduit needs, since we have about a million pounds of it in stock at any time.

A Brief Look at EMT and RMC

EMT vs RMC ConduitBoth EMT (electrical metallic tubing) and RMC (rigid metal conduit) serve as tunnels, or “raceways,” so to speak, for wiring and cables. They provide protection from accidental impacts, the elements, and other potential dangers. There are certain instances where EMT will be the better choice, while RMC will be the preferred option in others. Let’s take a quick look at both options so you can make the right decision.

  • EMT – This is often referred to as “thin wall” tubing. EMT is typically made of steel or aluminum, and primarily designed for indoor applications. You’ll find EMT in many different types of commercial and industrial settings. One of the main reasons is that it is very each to bend or cut, and provides a high level of protection for wiring. While EMT is best used indoors, there are certain times it can be used outdoors – as long as it includes non-corrosive supports, fasteners and fittings.
  • RMC – RMC is much more rugged than EMT. It’s a great deal heavier, so it will do a better job in harsh environments. It also does a great job of shielding electronic equipment from electromagnetic interference that sometimes comes from wiring. Since it’s thicker, it’s more expensive. If you will typically use your conduit inside, then EMT will likely be a more cost-effective choice.

Whatever You Decide, Make Sure You Choose Aluminum Conduit

You might find that EMT is a better choice than RMC for your specific situation, or you might decide the opposite. Either way, your best bet is to turn to aluminum. We’re biased, of course, since we only sell aluminum conduit. But we have a lot of reasons why it’s a much better choice than steel. These are some of the more important ones.

  • Aluminum conduit will save you a lot of money. It’s one-third the weight of steel, so you won’t spend nearly as much on material. Aluminum is also a lot easier to move and install. An installation that would normally take two (or possibly even three) workers can now be done with only one. That would free you to assign the other workers to other projects.
  • You’ll never have to worry about any issues with workers handling conduit that’s too hot or too cold. The reason is that aluminum possesses superior thermal conductivity. It will be nice and comfortable to handle, even in extreme temperatures.
  • Steel can degrade due to corrosion, putting your delicate – and expensive – wiring at risk for damage. Aluminum doesn’t degrade, thanks to a natural protective film.
