If you’re wondering about the different benefits of electrical metallic tubing vs. rigid metal conduit, the experts with American Conduit are here to help. In fact, we’ll be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the products we offer. There are some applications where EMT is a better option, while there are others where RMC is better. Here’s a quick comparison of the two so you can have the information you need to make the right choice.

How EMT and RMC Compare

Electrical Metallic Tubing vs Rigid Metal ConduitEMT is technically tubing, but most people refer to it as conduit. It has thin walls that are made of aluminum or steel, making it a great choice for a wide variety of industrial as well as commercial applications. EMT is very easy to cut as well as bend, and does an excellent job of protecting wiring.

Because it’s thin, however, EMT is typically best used indoors – with some exceptions. For example, if you use fasteners, supports and fittings that don’t corrode, you can use EMT outside. You connect sections of EMT with clamps, and use setscrews to secure the clamps.

RMC, on the other hand, has much thicker walls than EMT. It is extremely durable, and can protect cables in rugged, extreme environments. In addition, RMC protects sensitive electronics from electromagnetic interference that can sometimes come from cables or wiring.

The thickness of RMC makes it much heavier than EMT. As a result, installations are more labor-intensive.

Why Use Aluminum EMT and RMC?

Regardless of whether EMT or RMC is best for your specific application, you should always use aluminum rather than steel. American Conduit uses special alloys that make our conduit just as durable and strong as steel. It also resists corrosion, making it perfect for environments where large quantities of chemicals and water are present. Here are just some of the other reasons you should always go with aluminum.

  • Aluminum weighs 30 percent less than steel, making it easier to install – helping you save money on labor in the process – and less expensive to purchase and ship.
  • Not only does aluminum do a superior job of resisting corrosion due to moisture, it also offers better electrical and thermal conductivity. No matter how hot or cold the outside temperatures may get, aluminum will always remain safe to handle.
  • You don’t need any special tools to cut or bend aluminum conduit. The tools you already have will be perfect.
  • Aluminum takes much less effort to maneuver, and must less time to install.
  • Our aluminum conduit meets all safety codes, including UL and NEC codes.
