Reasons to Move to Aluminum

There are many people who still believe that steel is the ultimate choice for conduit. They might have been using it for decades, and they really don’t see any reason to switch. But if you do make the change, you could see incredible savings.

In many instances, customers who opt for aluminum conduit can see cost savings of as much as 60 percent per pound versus steel. The reason is that a pound of aluminum is equivalent to three pounds of steel. That means 300 pounds of aluminum conduit will cover three times the distance of steel conduit.

The savings don’t stop there, however. You could also save as much as 75 percent on labor. The average 10-foot length of steel conduit (four inches in diameter) weighs nearly 100 pounds – 98, to be exact. That length and diameter of aluminum conduit, on the other hand, only weighs in at 34 pounds.

It doesn’t take a math genius to figure out just how much of a difference that can make on your labor costs. It’s very probable that it would only take one worker to carry and install aluminum conduit. More than likely, it takes three of them to do the same thing with steel. If you change to aluminum, you could assign those other workers to other installations. You could conceivably complete three installations in the time it would normally take to finish one.

Built to Last

You might assume that you’d have to sacrifice strength and durability in order to realize those savings. That’s not the case whatsoever. Aluminum conduit is not only just as strong as steel, it also won’t develop rust or corrosion. You don’t need any expensive galvanizing, and it stand up to even the wettest, most corrosive environments.
