American Conduit, based in St. Augustine, FL, produces a comprehensive line of aluminum EMT conduit and rigid aluminum conduit in diameters and lengths that will meet even your most challenging needs.

Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) is an unthreaded, thin-walled tubing, generally made of galvanized steel or aluminum, that is used to protect electrical wiring from moisture, chemicals, and even pests that can chew through wiring and cause a short.

EMT is popular in commercial and industrial applications because it is lighter and thinner than rigid metal conduit and is relatively easy to bend and cut, and less time-consuming to install. The conduit or tubing also makes it easy to remove wiring at a later date without causing any damage.

In addition to indoor use, EMT can be installed outdoors provided that all fittings, supports and fasteners are made of corrosion-resistant materials, such as aluminum.

Why Choose Aluminum EMT?

EMT ConduitAluminum is lighter than steel and iron, and some alloys are stronger than some steel alloys. But aluminum has unique properties that are unmatched by steel and other materials:

  1. Lower cost: Aluminum EMT is less expensive than its galvanized steel counterpart based primarily on the weight of the material and the ease of installation. This enable you to save thousands of dollars on a typical job.
  2. Strength and weight: Aluminum has an extremely high tensile strength. It is about 30% of the weight of steel but similar in strength.  The light weight means that it is less expensive to ship and requires less manpower to maneuver and install. A standard 10-foot length of 4-inch rigid steel conduit, for example, weighs about 98 pounds and requires two people to carry and place it. The same length of aluminum conduit weighs only 34 pounds and can be handled by one person.
  3. Rust and corrosion: Unlike steel, which must be galvanized with a protective zinc coating to prevent rusting, aluminum is naturally rust and corrosion resistant without additional treatment. It will not rust or discolor, even after extended outdoor exposure. It is an excellent solution in applications where steel tubing is not suitable because of large amounts of water or chemicals, such as in food processing plants.
  4. Non-sparking: Unlike steel, aluminum EMT conduit is non-sparking. This reduces the risk of explosion in volatile environments.
  5. Thermal conductivity: At low temperatures, aluminum alloys get stronger without losing quality, making them excellent in cold weather applications. The metal also conducts heat well and will stay cool to the touch (a safety advantage).
  6. Recyclable: Aluminum is the ultimate green material. It can be recycled over and over again without losing any of its superb characteristics.
