A Brief Look at Aluminum Rigid Electrical Conduit

Rigid conduit tubing has thick walls for added protection. The different sections of tubing are joined together by metal connectors. Rigid electrical conduit does an excellent job of protecting wiring and cables from the elements, as well as accidental impacts. It also protects nearby electrical equipment from electromagnetic interference.

Many types of rigid conduit are made of steel – you’ll find it in industrial and commercial buildings all over the world. However, aluminum is, in many instances, actually a superior material. It’s much lighter, making it easier to maneuver and install. Aluminum doesn’t emit sparks, is non-magnetic, and won’t corrode or rust.

The cost savings of aluminum rigid conduit are substantial. Companies can save between 10-20 percent per foot versus steel, and can also see labor savings of up to 75 percent. The reason is that because aluminum weighs so much less than steel (30 percent less), you don’t need to devote as many workers to an installation.

Compliant With All Industry Standards

Even though our aluminum is lighter than steel, it’s just as strong. This is thanks to the special 6000 series alloys we use to treat our aluminum. American Conduit products meet all industry standards and are thoroughly inspected before they leave our facilities. These are just some of the standards our products meet.

  • UL-6A
  • ANSI C80.5
  • MIL-STD-129
  • MIL-STD-649
  • And many others

Earth Friendly

Not only is aluminum conduit superior to steel in terms of durability and cost, it’s also a more responsible choice from an environmental perspective.

About three-quarters of all the aluminum that has ever been produced is still being used. The reason is that the material is completely recyclable. In fact, you can recycle aluminum over and over and it will still retain all of its strength and reliability.
