Why Switch from Steel to Aluminum?

New research shows that contractors and engineering firms who switch from rigid steel conduit to rigid aluminum conduit realize significant cost savings, and those savings increase with the size of the conduit used and the size of the project.

Customers who choose rigid aluminum conduit for their projects experience cost savings of 40% to 60% per pound compared to the cost of rigid steel. Because one pound of aluminum is equal to three pounds of steel, you can cover three times the distance with the same amount of weight.

American Conduit’s rigid aluminum conduit can also provide labor savings of 35% to 75% in the field, primarily because aluminum is one-third lighter in weight than steel and easier to maneuver and install.  A standard 10-foot length of 4-inch rigid steel conduit weighs about 98 pounds and requires two people to carry and place it. The same length of aluminum conduit weighs only 34 pounds and can be handled by one person.

Unlike steel, aluminum resists corrosion without further treatment, which may be its greatest attribute. Our rigid aluminum conduit is manufactured of 6063 alloy in temper designation T-1. This “marine grade” alloy ensures strength and corrosion resistance and prevents rust and unsightly discoloration or streaking normally associated with rigid steel conduit.

Galvanizing is not required, and there is no paint or coating to wear or scratch off. These factors are most advantageous when your application involves a moist, damp or abrasive environment.

In addition, aluminum conduit is the ultimate green material. It can be almost totally recycled at the end of its life and never loses any of its superb characteristics.

To complement our aluminum conduit products, American Conduit also carries a full line of elbows and couplings in a range of sizes to suit your applications. Get in touch with us at 1.800.334-6825 to learn more, or request a quotation today.
